I saw it years ago in the heat preceeding the slumber
After a hard working day I went to rest against the shire
Layed down on a summit in fragrant wildflowers
Then could feel the distance & the echo of other gloomy hours
(My snail age) then the space web appeared as a spider's
This is when I really saw it for the first time
So far away though closer than ever
From the vines I saw Mars
Huge & unmasked
Replacing the mistress of tides
Blood is its colour, blood is the colour
Of wilderness, wealth & orgy
Madness, violence, conquest
Mars from the vines
2000 years ago, 2000 years away, the heat was even stronger
There was such a glory, stiff men & crimson-souled donnas
I heard brass chinking, saw myself falling under the hourrahs
Since I've returned I feel possessed
Occupied by a larvae
Squatted in my sleep
From uptown I still can see Mars
Branded on my retinas
Even from afar
It's still, still, still in the back of my eyes
Still, still, Mars on the vines
